What is Obstructive Sleep Apnea?

Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) happens when the muscles in the back of your throat and mouth relax during sleep, causing the soft tissue in that area to block the airway partially or completely. This interruption in breathing reduces the oxygen levels in your bloodstream. The brain detects the drop in oxygen and briefly wakes you to reopen your airway. This can occur multiple times throughout the night, often without you being aware of it. OSA can lead to feelings of fatigue, drowsiness, and unrest during the day. Take the questionnaire below to assess if you may be at risk for OSA.

Reclaim Your Sleep: It's estimated that 5.4 million Canadians have been diagnosed with, or are at risk for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It's important to recognize factors that place you at higher risk for OSA. The STOP-BANG Questionnaire is a widely accepted tool for screening likelihood of OSA.

Level III Home Sleep Apnea Testing (HSAT)

If you or your physician suspects you may have Obstructive Sleep Apnea or any form of sleep-disordered breathing, they may recommend a Level III Sleep Study, also known as a Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT). This simple process involves using a small monitor that you wear at home overnight to measure disturbances in breathing, oxygen saturation (SpO2) levels, and heart rate. The data collected is analyzed by experienced sleep medicine specialists, who will develop a personalized treatment plan based on your sleep study results.

CPAP Trial/Therapy

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP) Therapy is the gold standard for treating Obstructive Sleep Apnea. Our customized CPAP therapy for sleep apnea ensures that patients experience restful, uninterrupted sleep by maintaining open airways throughout the night. With various mask types and pressure settings, we tailor the therapy to maximize comfort and effectiveness. Our dedicated Respiratory Therapists work closely with clients to fine-tune their treatment, ensuring the best outcomes.

Our commitment to your care extends far beyond the initial therapy setup. Routine follow-up appointments help us monitor your progress and make necessary adjustments as your needs evolve. Weight changes, lifestyle factors, or facial structure variations can impact therapy effectiveness, and our team ensures your respiratory sleep solutions remain optimized to support long-term success.

Frequently Asked Questions

  • A Level III Home Sleep Apnea Test (HSAT) is a simple and convenient diagnostic tool for detecting sleep disorders like Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It involves wearing a small monitor at home overnight, which records your breathing patterns, oxygen levels, and heart rate. The data is analyzed by sleep medicine specialists, who provide a diagnosis and recommend personalized treatment options.

  • CPAP therapy, or Continuous Positive Airway Pressure therapy, is a highly effective treatment for Obstructive Sleep Apnea. It uses a machine to deliver a steady stream of pressurized air through a mask, preventing airway collapse during sleep. This eliminates snoring and breathing disturbances, allowing for restful, uninterrupted sleep. Our team customizes your CPAP therapy for maximum comfort and effectiveness.

  • Follow-up appointments are an essential part of your CPAP therapy journey. During these visits, our Respiratory Therapists evaluate your progress and make necessary adjustments to your CPAP settings. These routine check-ins ensure your therapy remains effective, especially if factors like weight, facial structure, or lifestyle change over time.

  • We strive to make CPAP therapy accessible for everyone. Our team helps patients navigate and access benefits from Group Health Insurance, Seniors Financial Assistance, Alberta Works, and AISH programs if eligible. We’re here to simplify the process and ensure you get the support you need for your respiratory sleep solutions.
